Ego and Self: The Old Testament Prophets, from Isaiah to Malachi

Originally a lecture series presented at the C.G. Jung Institute in Los Angeles, Ego and Self is a psychological commentary on the so-called prophetic books contained in the old Testament.  It is a continuation of Dr. Edinger’s detailed exegesis begun in The Bible and the Psyche: Individuation Symbolism in the Old Testament.

“All history,” he writes, “is a visible manifestation of God’s engagement in human affairs.  God on the human plane, so to speak.  All history is that, but it is as though the Jews were the only ones who realized it – with their religious genius, their ability to perceive the transpersonal dimension working in the background.

“If we think of collective history as meaningful, then we’ll attribute the same level of importance to individual history.  First of all to our own individual history and to that of our patients, the details of which can be perceived as a dialogue between the Self and the developing ego – evidence of a transpersonal purpose in our lives.”
